Leadership Update

The Rotary Theme for March is Water and Sanitation
In the Philippines, Rotary clubs and partners built 222 toilets, six rainwater collectors, seven communal handwashing stations, and 20 biosand filters. The project provided more than 1,000 people with access to proper toilet facilities and almost 600 people with a regular supply of clean water.

Dictionary Project

As we  honor our Students of the Month, we always ask if any of them still have their dictionaries we gave them back when they were in 3rd grade, and many of them still do!  We delivered dictionaries to all of the elementary schools in SAD 17.  This year, there are 220 students who will receive a dictionary. This is a project that all club members enjoy participating in by handing them out directly to the students and talking to them about Rotary and the dictionaries. One thing the kids always like to find is the longest word in the English language! A few years ago, we named the Dictionary Project in honor of Mary Lou Burns, a long time teacher and administrator in SAD 17 and a Rotarian for many years who was instrumental in starting this project. Since we started donating dictionaries back in 2004, to date we have given out 5,184!

Jan Vocation Service Month

In honor of January being Vocational Service month, the Oxford Hills Rotary Club has invited guest speakers to come to our meetings and share their vocation with the members.  Each speaker is thanked and presented a framed certificate of appreciation.  Recently, Newly Retired Norway Fire Chief Dennis Yates shared his vocation and said he has worked for the Norway FD for 48 years, serving as chief for the last 13 years.  Dennis said he had used the Rotary 4 Way Test, but never knew where it had come from!
MSAD 17 Interim Superintendent Heather Manchester spoke about her extensive education background, both as a teacher and an administrator.  We’re hoping ‘interim’ gets dropped soon and she is hired as our full time Superintendent.

January is Vocational Service Month

Greetings:
Commencing Saturday, January 1st, Rotary International promotes Vocational Service Month.
In addition to our January 2022 Club Meetings' Programs and Members' Vocation & Career Bios Booklets, Heidi Ortiz, Ed Millett and I also wish to share with you the following Vocational Service Month promotional information:

The Object of Rotary is a philosophical statement of Rotary’s purpose and the responsibilities of Rotarians. The concept of vocational service is rooted in the Second Object, which calls on Rotarians to “encourage and foster”:
These objectives are:
     * To encourage and foster high ethical standards in business and professions, to recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations, to dignify the Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
     * To apply the ideal of service in personal, business and community life.
     * To advance international understanding and goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of businessmen and professional men and women united in the ideal of service.
Paul Harris wrote: "Each Rotarian is a connecting link between the idealism of Rotary and their trade or profession".

Vocational Service is the way Rotary fosters and supports the application of the Ideal of Service to the pursuit of all vocations. It is the shared responsibility of both the Rotary Club and its members. The role of the Club is to implement and encourage the objectives by its own actions in dealing with the community and by the development of projects that enable members to use their vocational talents in the service of the community.  The role of members is to conduct themselves and their businesses in accordance with Rotary principles, and support the Vocational Service projects that the club has developed.

During January, Rotarians are encouraged to focus on this important avenue of Rotary service.  Discussions on vocational service can lead to projects that not only develop the ethical consciousness and vocational skills of Rotarians but also the talents within their communities.  Vocational Service Month is an opportunity to begin year-long vocational service activities, ranging from Rotary discussions to awards to community projects.

Here's our club's Third Annual Vocational Service Month's Community Speakers Series schedule (may be subject to change):

Thank you for supporting Polio Eradication

The Rotary Club of Oxford Hills would like to say ‘thank you’ to 290 Maine Street Bar & Grill in Norway for hosting their 1st Annual Pints for Polio fundraiser.  290 agreed to donate $1 for every ‘pint’ sold at the event, which was held on 10/24/21, World Polio Day.  Yes, Polio has been eradicated in the US, but it is still out there in 3rd world countries and only a plane ride away!

When Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, there were 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries every year. We’ve made great progress against the disease since then. Today, polio cases have been reduced by 99.9 percent, and just two countries continue to report cases of wild poliovirus: Afghanistan and Pakistan. And we remain committed to the end.  The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to match that 2-to-1, for a total yearly contribution of $150 million.

Rotary members would also like to thank the entire OH Community, both those who participated in the Pints for Polio event as well as those who made donations at their recent Polio Road Toll held on 10/17/21.  Between the 2 Polio events and with the Gates 2-to-1 match, over $7,000 will go towards the eradication efforts.  Thank you 290 and the entire Oxford Hills!

2020 Rotarian of the Year-Dan Hart

Congratulations to our 2020 Rotarian of the Year, Dan Hart!  Presented by our 2019 Rotarian of the Year, Peter Kaurup:
As I pondered drafting the script for this year’s Rotarian of the Year for 2020, a certain Jimmy Buffett song came to mind.  Its title is “Quietly Making Noise” and this year’s recipient definitely deserves being considered as an example of the songwriter’s intent.  It takes a special person who never seeks personal recognition but instead does their job quietly while getting others involved and making them believe that it was their idea in the first place.

There’s never been a year like 2020 and I know that we can all agree that we never want to see anything like it again during our lifetime.  But as we transitioned from the normalcy of our Rotary year beginning in July of 2019 and into the ever increasing challenges of 2020, certain individuals in our club stepped way up to assume the associated additional responsibilities.  Luckily, this year’s recipient had just retired from a career that provided him with years of opportunities to make a difference in other people’s lives and this retirement allowed him to give more of his personal time to Rotary.  Several of our members noted that “he has really stepped up since his retirement” and assumed even more responsibility in our club’s activities.  I believe that at this point everyone here knows that I’m talking about recently retired school administrator, Dan Hart.

Dan has worked tirelessly as our Membership Committee Chair.  In addition to keeping the committee focused and relevant he has also “rekindled the spirit of growth” in many of our members.  His efforts have helped to bring in several new members as a result and his desire to offer an alternative time and venue at a local restaurant provided us with a much needed change of direction in our meeting schedule.

As Vocational Services Director, Dan has brought new life to our annual Vocational Services Month with new and interesting local business persons who have shared their career paths with us.  Dan then recognized them for their contributions via the local media outlets.

As Club Protection Officer, Dan has really made our required annual training fun and informative while discussing topics that can be otherwise be boring at times.

When Covid 19 dramatically impacted our food distribution programs at local food banks and school systems, Dan jumped right into assisting the Bridgton Lake Region Rotary Club at the Harrison Food Pantry as a food packer and delivery driver.  His service to this cause continued on for months at his own personal financial expense and during some very interesting inclement weather.

Due to his background within our local school district, Dan continues to be one of our strongest assets on the Scholarship Committee, promoting scholarships within the schools, organizing the selection process and professionally making the award presentations.  This is a man that knows hundreds of students and teachers on a first name basis and their scholastic backgrounds.  That’s impressive!

Dan also volunteered with Ready Maine to assist at a local Covid 19 Vaccination operation.

He continues to be an integral member of our Board of Directors, bringing to the table many suggestions that can and will make our club more vibrant and relevant to our internal members and our external community.

So, in reflecting on Dan as this year’s Rotarian of the Year, I remember a quote from some previous leadership training – “A leader, aka Rotarian of the Year, is best when people barely know he exists;  when his work is done, his aim fulfilled;  they will say, we did it ourselves!”

So thank you Dan!  Well done!

At our Club board meeting tonight,  it was announced that we have to go back to Zoom meetings for the month of November, beginning with this week's meeting Wed, 11/4/20. This is at the request of the church and is due to the dramatic increase in recent COVID cases in Maine.

The church will re-evaluate the situation at the end of the month and make a determination as to whether we can go back to meeting in person in December or will have to continue with Zoom.

2019 Rotarian of the Year

The Rotary Club of Oxford Hills recently held their Annual Dinner and enjoyed fellowship and meal provided by the Honey Badger of Oxford.  After dinner, the Club recognized Past Presidents in attendance, and also presented the Immediate Past President, George Rice, with a Paul Harris Fellow Award for his outstanding leadership, guidance and support of the Club.  George is one of the original Club Charter members, and served his 2nd term as President, the first back in 1989-90.   Past Rotarians of the Year were also recognized, as well as naming the 2019 Rotarian of the Year, Peter Kaurup.  Peter has only been a member of the Club for 2 years, but has been active since day one. When there is a need for someone to step up, he is one of the first to do so. He has helped with the Club’s Auction, Lobster- Steak Fest, and other activities such as the lobster for scholars, setting tents, and setting up for district events. He enjoys outdoor activities and supports our community through volunteering. The fellowship of Rotary is an important part of who he is. He has made many friends, explores his hobbies with others and volunteers regularly in our community and the Rotary district. This enhances the fellowship of our club. Congratulations to both Rotarians for their continued dedication to doing good in the world.  Peter was also presented with a Paul Harris Fellow Award.

2017 Rotarian of the Year, Tina Fox!!

The Rotary Club of Oxford Hills is pleased to announce their 2017 Rotarian of the Year, Tina Fox.  Tina was presented a plaque, flowers and a Paul Harris Fellow award at the club’s banquet held on Monday, March 26 at Maurice Restaurant.

Tina has been a member of the club for 2 years, and has done a lot in a very short period of time.  She is currently the advisor at OHCHS of the Interact Club (high school version of Rotary) and has been working with the students in various areas to promote community service within their school and the OH community.  They won 1st place in the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce 2017 Christmas parade, in the non-profit category, and were so pleased with the win.

Tina has also been spearheading the Student of the Month program as the liaison between the school and the Club.  Each month, students and family are invited to attend breakfast with the Rotarians and be recognized for their efforts in school.

Tina is also chairing the upcoming May Day Play Day, a fun, free day for the children in our community.  She has lots of activities planned, to help make the event bigger and better than last year.  She is recruiting not only Interact students to help, but also getting many of the students from the sports team involved as well.

Tina was nominated for the award by members of the Rotary Club, and was chosen by a committee of the Club’s last 3 year’s Rotarians of the Year.  Tina was very surprised and pleased with the recognition and was a very deserving recipient.  CONGRATULATIONS TINA!!

Newest Paul Harris Fellow-Evy Marshall

The Rotary Club of Oxford Hills is pleased to announce the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellow Award recently to Evy Marshall.  Evy is the mother of Rotarians, Beth Abbott, Patty Rice, and Rotarian-in-spirit, Barbara Brunjes, as well as mother-in-law to Rotarian, George Rice.

The presentation of a Paul Harris Fellow recognition is The Rotary Foundation’s way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its humanitarian and educational programs.  It is named for the founder, Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who started Rotary International with three business associates in 1905.

Rotarians often designate a Paul Harris Fellow as a tribute to a person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives of Rotary and practices their motto—SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

Evy has practiced this motto her entire life.  She was a Brownie & Girl Scout leader for her three daughters, a member of the Mt. Hope Rebekah Lodge, is a member of the Heywood Club, whose motto is ‘neighbors helping neighbors’, she volunteered for Stephens Memorial Hospital cooking for their coffee shop, assisted with community immunizations with Dr. Harper and Dr. Hazelton, she is a volunteer for Beacon Hospice, and although she doesn’t make client visits anymore, she does design and make memory pillows, and American flag lap robes for the many Veterans in the community.  She was named Beacon Hospice Volunteer of the Year in 2013.  She recently made a patchwork quilt, in memory of her husband, John E. Marshall, a Veteran in the Air Force, and donated it to the OH Rotary Club, who sold raffle tickets, and will start a new Veteran project with the proceeds.  Evy was very overwhelmed and pleased with the surprise Paul Harris Fellow recognition.

Lobster & Steak Fest

Posted by John Griffith on Sep 13, 2015
The results are in and our 29th Annual Lobster & Steak Fest was a huge success. We prepared and served almost 400 dinners to our guests and we had live entertainment again this year, back by popular demand, Just Us Two. While we had some doubts about the weather and did have one thunderstorm while setting up early in the afternoon, the skies cleared, the sun came out and it was a beautiful late afternoon and early evening to enjoy a lobster or steak dinner. Thanks to every member of the club who participated, but a special thanks to George Rice and Dave Preble for doing all of the heavy cooking. They worked very hard all day ensuring that everyone had a great dinner and a great time.

Successful 2015 Auction

Posted by John Griffith on Jul 26, 2015
We had another very successful flea market and auction on July 11th on the grounds of Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. It was a lot of work over four days - setting tents, moving items from the storage trailer, picking up items people donated, organizing things, running the auction and cleaning up - but it was a lot of fun as well. Thanks to the local boy scout for camping out Friday night guarding our "stuff", to Dan Allen for serving as auctioneer, Paul Thornfeldt for picking up many items, Chris Twitchell for running the flea market, Patty Rice for running the ticket auction and  every other member who served in some way. We also need to give a huge thanks to Bessey Motors for donating a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country van and Ripley & Fletcher Ford for donating a 2009 Ford Escape for us to auction. This auction is our largest fund raising event of the year, providing over half of our annual budget. It is very gratifying to have the support of so many community members and businesses. Thank you all!

The Rotary Club of Oxford Hills is proud to announce the 2014 Rotarian of the Year (ROY) is John Griffith. The selection committee, made up of the last 3 year's recipients, reviewed 15 nomination papers, and made their decision and choice based on several criteria: 1) Attendance 2) Club project participation 3) Community participation both as a Rotarian and as a non Rotarian 4) Promotion of Rotary within the schools and community 5) Committee involvement and follow through and 6) Club office held, quality of work, and committees chair. Some of the quotes used as 2013 ROY Curtis Cole made the presentation: "this person has been amazing to our club all year!” Another reminded us that “this person participates in ALL club projects.” Still another said that “everything he says he will do, HE DOES!” So congratulations to John Griffith.  John is retired from serving Norway Savings Bank for many years as a loan officer.  He resides in Norway with his wife, Shelley.   Shown in the photo left to right, President Christina Twitchell, John Griffith, and Curtis Cole.  Congratulations John!!

Many thanks to all our members and customers who helped make our 25th Annual Lobster & Steak Fest a huge success.  There was musical entertainment by the "No Name Banjo Band' along with juggling, and our own moon bouce for the kids.  Thank you for your support of the Oxford Hills Community!  A special thank you to Grover Gundrilling for their very generous ticket purchase!

Rotary/Kiwanis Auction & Flea Market

Posted by Patricia Rice

The Oxford Hills Rotary Club in partner with the Norway-Paris Kiwanis Club held another very successful auction & flea Market.  Both clubs would like to say 'thank you' to all the members for their hard work, all the businesses for their generous donations and the entire Oxford Hills Community for their continued support!  Proceeds from the auction and flea market will benefit the many community charities and programs supported by these two service organizations.
